In response to the challenges posed by technology, the EU introduced Regulation 2016/679/EU, which triggered important changes to the existing legislative framework.

The purpose of the Regulation is to protect natural persons during the processing of their "personal data" and applies to all forms of processing (whether automated or not). The novelty of the Regulation lies in the fact that it covers the processing of personal data of European citizens regardless of where the data processor/processor is based.
